Cask Strength Whiskies

Malt whisky comes from the still at over 60% alcohol by volume (115o proof). During maturation it loses both strength and volume. In volume it will lose from evaporation some 15% every eight years, which amounts to between four and five million gallons of whisky a year! It is forbidden by law to top the casks, and this loss is known as the angel's share.

Cask Strength Whiskies Before the First World War, all whisky was bottled straight from the cask - i.e. at about 57% (or higher) alcohol by volume (100o proof). Then in 1916, as a wartime measure, it was ordained that the strength be reduced to 30%. A bitter fight ensued and a compromise was reached at 40% (70o proof), which has remained the norm ever since.

Our label indicates the cask number and bottling date, along with the distillation year and strength.

Among the distilleries whose whiskies are available at Cask Strength are: Bladnoch, Caol Ila, Glen Mhor, Longmorn and Strathisla.
