MiscellaneousMeasure the Alcohol Content on your own! This hydrometer from Glenfarclas functions by the same principle as the hydrometers which are used by the distilleries during the distillation process. Most whiskies mature in oak casks at a 'natural' alcohol content (cask strength) of app. 60% ABV (app. 105 Proof). The strength of a whisky is normally reduced during bottling to 40 - 43% ABV (70 Proof). This hydrometer should help you, to determine the strength reduction by adding water by yourself. Take a slim glass and let the hydrometer float in e.g. Glenfarclas 105. At normal room temperature (20°C), the hydrometer will show 60% ABV. The display varies at different temperatures. By the time, you will get a feeling, that you need quite an amount of water to reduce such a strong whisky like the Glenfarclas 105 to 40% ABV. Hint: You need less whisky for the measurement, if you use a standard test tube for the measurement. The hydrometer can easily float inside the test tube. |
